Excellent value for the money !
You can do anything with this drill press that you can do with a comparable floor model. I mounted the drill press on a work table with casters so I can move it anywhere I need it in my shop. Can't do that with my floor model press. Plenty of power for most any job, and it has negligible spindle runout.

Very good quality drill press
I used denatured alcohol to clean the drill press when I was assembling it. Be careful not to rub the plate where the serial number is printed on because it rubs off. By the time I noticed, it was too late. Luckily there is a faint image of the serial number when I shine a bright light at a shallow angle.
This Jet drill press is a better quality drill press than the Porter Cable floor drill press from Lowe's. It is well worth the extra expense. I used to borrow my neighbor's Porter Cable drill press so I have first hand experience. It is quieter and runs smoother. It is easier to clamp the work on the table because the Jet's table has a lip around the edge. It runs true with nearly no run off.
The drill press comes with a light. But it is located behind the arbor. I would prefer a light that shines on the work directly.
It would be nice if it has laser lines to guide the bit. But my neighbor's Porter Cable's laser lines are not accurate and I am not sure it can be tuned. So if the Jet has laser lines, there should be a way to adjust them.

I use the Drill Press for woodworking projects. The 16-speed adjustment is easy to use. There is no bit wabble. Easy to assemble.

Excellent choice for home workshop
While this drill press is more expensive than those you can buy in the big box stores the quality is obvious when you use it. It is significantly heavier than the other small drill presses, but I was able to assemble it on my own without assistance (even for lifting the drill head onto the pole).I have used it for the last 6 weeks for a variety of project involving wood, steel and aluminum and have found that it works flawlessly.

The instruction/assembly manual is adequate and covers the floor model as well. The details on assembling the mechanism to raise and lower the work table seem incomplete, but after a few minutes I was successful in assembling the press. The instructions also show a different base than was shipped with the drill press. The only difference was the change from 4 holes to mount the base to the bench top in the manual to 2 holes for mounting in the actual base. The two holes are more than adequate for stable mounting, so I don't see this as a problem.

I orders the bench top instead of the floor model so I could move it around my workshop as needed. I built a wheeled base for the press and find it is well balanced and is easy to roll from location to location.

Overall this is a solid drill press that I expect to be the last one I will need to buy. I would recommend it without reservation.

Metal and wood drill press
Pretty good drill press. Wasn't too hard to put together. Easy to change speeds. Pretty heavy. I like the light fixture built in to the press with a separate switch to turn it on. I could have used a little more power though. I can stall it out with a monster countersink bit from Lumberjack tools. I'm not too sure if there is a press out there that can handle a 2" countersink that I could afford. The shipping info said it would ship in three to four weeks. That sucked. It took about three weeks to get here.

I noticed the Jet JDP-15M is a "woodworking" drill press, but it is nearly identical to the "metalworking" Jet J-2530 drill press.

What are the differences (besides table size)?

Will the JDP-15M be adequate as a metal working-only drill press?
Mark on Sep 4, 2015
