    Comments about JET JWL-1236, 12-in x 34-1/2-in 3/4 HP Woodworking Lathe:

I use the jwl 1236 lathe for turning table pedestals, bowls, vases, spindles, you name something round and I've probly turned it on this lathe. Its a great lathe for the price. The best feature about this lathe is the swiveling headstock. I tend not to use the detents, but rather swivel it 45* and lock it in, this works awesome for turning most bowls.
CONS: There are 2 things I dislike about this lathe. The tool rest extension arm doesn't seem sturdy enough to use on large bowls with the headstock turned out a 90*. Its just not stable enough.
PROS: Its got enough power to spin a 30" oak pedestal thats got an 11" diamater. Thats pretty good I'd say.

CON 2: I would like a heavier base. The bed is indeed cast and heavy, but the base either needs to be bolted to my floor, or heavier. When I turn large things that are not cylindrical I've got to be very careful not to spin it to fast.

PRO 2: Owned the lathe for 8 years and have never had any maintence issues. Maybe I'll need a belt soon, I would suggest upgrading to a link style belt instead of using the v belt.

CON 3: The motor overheated on me once. It smelled really bad, but I hit the reset and it started right back up and has been going ever since.

I have put a lot of hours of use into this lathe, I can't see myself needing to upgrade to anything else. Its a great beginner lathe, as well as intermediate. If I ever "turn" professional, I may want to consider something a little more rigid and robust. But, this suits my needs for now.
