Details

JWP-208HH-1 helical head planer quickly and quietly transforms rough lumber into smooth boards, with a full 20 in. planing width. Its heavy-duty cast iron and steel construction keeps the workpiece steady and supported, while the conveniently located two-speed gear box allows for quick and easy feed rate adjustments. This machine means business with a powerful 5 HP induction motor combined with a helical insert cutterhead housing 92 staggered carbide knives. You'll appreciate the sets of three steel infeed and outfeed rollers to help prevent annoying snipe. A large cast-iron table with smooth-as-glass surface makes this planer a beautiful addition to the shop. And since planers kick up a lot of dust, we made dust collection easy with an exclusive angled 4 in. dust port to keep your hose out of the way.

Big planer for Big jobs
I have the non-helical cutterhead (straight knives) and would pay the extra for the helical head if I could do it over. Smoother cut on crazy grain and less noise with the helical cutterhead. It does a great job on wider stock and glue-ups. It is heavy - but I see that as a benefit rather than a detrement since my planer is in a permanent position in the shop. The 3hp is plenty powerful enough for the 20" width and the top rollers are handy for stacking planed wood in process. Retractable side bar handles assist moving it but it will require two people. A high volume chip collection system is a must with this planer.

Great planer
The machine is great just don't like that it doesn't come with an adopter from 5" to 4". When I purchased it the website said it did come with a 4" dust port that comes off to the side

Assembly wasn't difficult and took a little over an hour to uncrate, wire and bolt on/adjust cast iron table extensions. The bottom rollers needed a little adjustment; they were set to factory specs, but I like tighter tolerances on my machines. But honestly, an machine I have ever purchase, regardless of manufacture, needed some minimal adjustments. Once I had it set up and running, I put it though some test runs with both "green-ish", kiln dried, and character grade lumber in a variety of species: white/red oak, hard maple, cherry, jatoba, ebony, & walnut. I could not have been happier with the results. I was so impressed with about it handled all the different species I glued up 5/4 character grade white oak in 18" x 72" panels as my final test to put this machine thought it's paces. The machine never skipped a beat taking off 1/8" in one pass. It handled 2"knots with virtually no chipping or blow out and the finish cut was smooth it almost appeared to be sanded. I'm being literal when I say, I would not have run this board through my wide belt sander, to prep for stain. 150/220 grit with an orbital sander would have been enough to prep and saved me the cost of using up my wide belt paper.

Great Machine
You're reading this, so you must be serious woodworker who's familiar with planing and sanding. I've only had the machine operational for one day, but the first few test passes produced excellent results on cherry, oak and maple. NO KNIFE LINES, smoothness equal to or better than 120 sanding. No ripples, No tearout. Much quieter than my 12" Tersa bladed planer. Factory setup also excellent - less than .03" thickness difference across whole width of the bed. Dust collection is very good, only a minor amount of chips escaped (using a 1.5 hp WoodSucker, 6" ducting).

Receiving and set up: Comes crated on its own pallet. Pallet is too small for standard fork lift so trucking company placed the whole thing on a standard pallet. I'm a one man operation, so getting the machine in place took some doing. I used the integrated lifting bars to raise the uncrated machine an inch, slid the pallets out and set the machine back down a Portamate 3500. Maneuvered easily on this base to its final location. Wiring was also easy. The machine comes with a four foot whip, you need to add a 30amp plug or hard wire it.

Degreasing the cast iron took 20 or so minutes, then a little bit more time to clean the oil spray from rollers after the machine was first turned on. Then drive belts took a few minutes to break in, leaving soot like film on their sheet metal shroud.

Installing and aligning the in and out feed tables went smoothly. Casting holes and threading were accurate.

Exhaust dust design could be better. The 5" diameter shute leaves the machine horizontally and centered over the out feed table, blocking access to the table a bit. I put a 45 degee "up" section as the first piece of duct work to give more clearance. This is a minor issue.

Fit and finish are excellent.

I installed a Wixey WR550 remote readout. It's very convenient, now that it's installed, but I sent an unreasonable amount of time figuring out where to attach the thing. Settled on the corner that the lift crank is on. This required that the front table lock knob be reversed and placed on the left side of the machine.

I will update when I have more experience.

I was planning to purchase the fraternal twin with a bigger price tag, but decided to save some money and 'settle' for the Jet. I have been more than pleased. This thing has power to spare. I've planned some 18 wide hard maple panels with it and it acted like it was nothing. I have not discovered one thing yet that is a complaint.
