Freight Orders

Freight deliveries require a delivery time be scheduled and someone must be present at the time of delivery to inspect and sign for the merchandise. A representative from the freight carrier will call the phone number entered at checkout to schedule the delivery.

Liftgate Service

For freight deliveries, you have the option of adding a liftgate to your delivery. A liftgate is the device that lowers a product from the truck to ground level.

CPO recommends adding liftgate service for freight deliveries exceeding 100 lbs if you do not have a loading dock or fork lift at the delivery address. Additional charges may apply. The liftgate option will be presented during the checkout process.

Please note that liftgate service only ensures the product is removed from the truck. We recommend you have the additional help of two to four people to move the product to its desired location because drivers are not required to assist.

Requesting liftgate service after ordering may result in additional charges and delays.

Good value
I've had this lathe now for just about a year, and it does everything I've asked of it. No, it isn't electronic variable speed, but it is relatively easy to change the speed while running. I have turned small and big projects with ease. The 1 HP motor isn't as powerful as the 1642, which is also a pretty amazing tool, but unless you're turning very large, very heavy stock, it does just fine. I'd recommend this lathe to anyone. Heavy legs, stable and very easy to use.

A Very Solid Machine.
I felt compelled to give this machine a few kudos since the only review posted previously was somewhat negative.

This is a good value. You can probably purchase one of Jet's 14-42 wood lathes (no longer available) used for $500-800, and even out-of-the-box the 14-40 is a bargain at the discounted price shown above. The weight of the machine plus the extremely well-designed cast iron brackets for a ballast shelf makes the entire unit quite stable. The outboard feature and pivoting head has allowed me to turn things that would not fit onto Jet's 16-42, and that unit retails at $2500 or more. Yes, there are times when I wish it had more horsepower but it has what I would consider adequate muscle to do the job.

Yes, a Reeves drive needs care -- you should NEVER change speeds when the motor is turned off -- and the belt will need replacement every so often. (I know this is sacrilege, but I bought one at NAPA for a third of Jet's price.) But the speed adjustment is mechanical, so there are no electronics that can go haywire. As long as you pay attention and don't abuse it, the speed control system will last for years.

This new model is an improved version of the 42, which I happen to own. The speed control lever has been moved away from the quill, and the motor has been repositioned, resolving some of the clearance issues that popped up from time to time.

Might be better choices?
As a beginning turner, I wanted a lathe that had variable speed and a rotating headstock to allow for larger pieces. This lathe fit the bill. With the legs, it's a stable, heavy lathe that turns off balance pieces with no drama. To this point I've done mostly spindle work, with a few goblets and green bowls.

The Reeves style variable speed is difficult to use, and the adjustment knob is difficult to turn even with the lathe running. It takes a lot of turning to go from the slowest speed to the highest. I'm considering putting a handled wheel on it similar to the tailstock to help with this. Once the speed is set, I have no issues with it, but know you are not getting an electronic variable speed here. (My bad for not researching this well enough prior.) The indicator for speed is not correctly aligned in my lathe, it displays about 600 at the lowest position although it is turning at 400rpm. The inclusion of the toolrest offset for slightly outboard turning was a nice touch. The 12" toolrest included needed some filing to be smooth as there were some rough spots. It's a great lathe, but to do it again I might look for something else - The price point and reeves drive system are my big issues.
